Effects
of a Doula on the Mother Infant Pair Following Delivery
Studies
have consistently shown significant medical benefits for
mother and infant in having a doula. Perhaps not surprising
are the shorter labors and reduced interventions when a
doula is present. But what about after the birth?
The
findings are truly amazing. In several repeated, controlled
and randomized studies, the doula supported mothers showed
more affectionate interaction with their infants, with more
smiling, talking and stroking than the mothers who did not
have a doula.
The
doula supported mothers also spent more time with their
infants showing significantly greater incidence of breastfeeding
and feeding on demand or by feeding cues. This works into
less feeding difficulties and healthier babies.
This
positive beginning continues so that even by six weeks there
are statistically significant differences.
